Comedians Make Fun of Engineers

10/21/2018

                       The Algorithm

I work as an engineer.
Some people think engineers are boring.
I heard it being said by two comedians.
Gad Elmalah said so yesterday in Chicago.
He added he did not want to talk to us.
I heard people laugh, but my wife and I did not.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus said it on the Tonight Show.
I did not like that, but she is entitled to her opinion.

Sometimes I am like a machine with a function.
I write algorithms to solve problems and replace workers
Sometimes, I walk in the city with no aim.
I am open to colors, sounds, and movements.

For 15 years I am in my car for two hours.
That is a total of 8.2 months which I spent on the road
And I have not met any other driver
Heading west on I-74 to Peoria at 6:40 am.

Sometimes, I feel like an algorithm that fails to run correctly.
I leave work early, and my supervisor does not say anything.
I avoid the 4:00 pm traffic and stop at the rest area to take a nap.
Three times a week, I play pick-up soccer with non-engineers.
We kick the ball, laugh, and joke for two hours.
When I score a goal, I do my little North African dance.
I am not boring.

                               - Jean Kerr, Poor Richard

                          - Proverbe hollandais

Lies last for years

I just read the following french sentenses in a book by Khalfa Mameri, Algerian author, in his book, Abane Remdane, le faux procès.

Translated into english, it becomes:

"The lies have a long life. Once spoken, they peddle, spread, and become embedded in the minds and colonize the memory they continue to condition without the possibility to be erased completely."

This is why what is more dangerous than an idea is a belief.

Animal Rights - Lecesiter

On Sunday, November 5 I walked from the Marriott Hotel to downtown Leceister. It was not a long walk :Only 4.3 miles (7.095 Km). One hundred yards from the hotel, I ran into a snail that slowly crossing my path. I stopped and knelled to look it and witness a short moment of its life.  It felt my presence, retracted its two thin tentacles (its eyes are located at the end of each one) and its body and hid in its shell.  After a minute of two of me not moving, it felt safe and  resumed the long journey and finish the last stretch on the foot path to the grass.

I was quite amazed that it crossed the car rod without loosing its life.

I tool resumed my walk to the City Centre of Leceister, walking past houses, crossing streets and roundabouts. The weather was nice: Blue sky with a few clouds, and the air was fresh and pleasant.

What attracted me at the walk way of the City Centre was  a group od lads and ladys, standing in a circle, looking outside of the circle. A few held signs that said "Truth," others held laptops for onlookers to see the violence perpetrated on pigs in farms. A few of their colleagues were outside talking to visitors and people who strolled by.  One of them, Michael, approached me and started to discuss the matter. I indicated that I had recently seen three documentaries that have started to make me think about my contribution to animal violence because of my consumption of me. They are available on Netflix as of this date:  COWSPIRACY, WHAT THE FORK, and FORKS OVER KNIVES.

Brian, a Happy Man

I met Brian many years ago when he owned the used bookstore in Normal, IL.   He was an educated man with a beard and bright small eyes.  He loved books, spoke some French, and dabbed in art.
A few years ago, he sold his bookstore and I stopped running into him in the city.  I kept wondering if he had moved away from cold Central Illinois and decided to settle in warm Florida. He did not.
I ran into him today at the Corn Festival in downtown Normal.  He was busy, but I realized he looked happy at his new calling.  I decided to interrupt him, talk to him, and watch him apply his skills at  his new pastime.

He joked when he said that he should not have owned a used bookstore. He  confessed that he enjoyed meeting so many interesting people while he owned it.

He kept a lively conversation with his client: A pretty, young girl who sat in front him while he limned her portrait. Below are a few pictures of Brian, his work, and one of his client.
