Fortune Magazine: Lost in Translation

7/13/2010

What’s wrong with Fortune magazine? I read with great interest their latest article, “From Tech Bubbles to Soap Bubbles” by Abby Ellin until I ran into a problem understanding what the writer decided to translate the meaning of the Algerian entrepreneur, Salah Boukadoum.’s first name but refrained from translating his last name.

In the article available at the
cnn
website, the author erroneously translated the featured entrepreneur’s first name, “Salah” as “success” while a more appropriate translation would be “good”, “right”, or “pious.”

Was the word “success” used to insinuate that anyone leaving their native country ends succeeding in America.  In addition, the author failed to translate “Boukadoum.”  In the Berber language, "Bou" and "kadoum" mean "the one with" and "face" or "visage", respectively  That translation would fit nicely since soap is used on people’s faces.

It is just very sad to see a well-read US magazine’s failure to excel in a very simple report. Why does it choose to translate an Arabic first name and not a Berber last name?
